Riesling – the perfect summer drink
The summer duvet is out and that BBQ is starting to call from the shed. It’s time to hunt out the shorts you bought last year (hopefully they still fit), sit back and enjoy a summer tipple.
Hailing from Washington State in North West USA, Charles & Charles‘ is one of the growing number of producers expanding the traditional West Coast wine growing area beyond California, into Oregon and Washington State.
This Riesling is the perfect partner to lazy summer evenings. It is grown on the Art Den Hoed vineyard in the Yakima Valley.
2015 was the warmest vintage on record in Washington State, though this higher elevation vineyard was a crucial counter-balance to the heat and enabled us to pick in late-October. The site received a lot of water, maximising the canopy and shading the Riesling fruit, which delayed ripening and preserved lots of natural acidity.
This is a full-flavoured Riesling, with aromas driven by honeysuckle, linden, spice, lime, apricot and white peach. Hints of minerally slate round the taut palate.

About the Producers
Charles & Charles is a collaboration founded in 2008 between Wine Enthusiast Magazine 2014 Winemaker of the year, Charles Smith (K Vintners, Charles Smith Wines) and Charles Bieler (Three Thieves, BIELER Pere et Fils and Gotham Project).
Together they make just four wines, The Rosé, a Cabernet Sauvignon blend, a Chardonnay, and this single vineyard Riesling. Bringing some North West laid back style to their wines, being badass and drinking wines are synonymous with both Charles.
Charles Smith’s long-time friend and artist, Rikke Korff designed the label, to project a distinctly Northwest feel and illustrate the incredible diversity of the physical features of Washington State, from sea to mountains.
